They didn't play out like thoughtful distractions at all, but more as cheap tricks to confuse the reader. Or hey, maybe no one wore it? Everyone who "saw" the small conductor was lying anyway, right? So maybe that part never happened and the button and hastily packed uniform were only staged to make those stories hold weight? I suppose we will never know. Though I suppose in the latter we can guess it was Hildegard Schmidt as the uniform was found in her luggage? And while Poirot posits that it may belong to Princess Dragomiroff it is never revealed who wore it, who put it there, or who wore the Wagon Li conductor's uniform. The scarlet kimono was found in Poirot's luggage. The answer to this question is actually one that has hindered my appreciation for this novel.
